Having completed my AS level coursework and exam and now moving onto my A2 coursework and exam I am really looking forward too A2 and what it en tales.
Looking back on year 12 and my work in AS media i am confident going in to year 13 and the A2 media course, I have some work I am proud of from AS such as my music magazine, this was our main task for the course and the most exciting, I really enjoyed this because it gave me a chance to be creative and really explore different features and formats of media like Indesign, Photoshop and other editing software platforms. It also introduced me as to how to use a green screen and edit green screen images, I found this all very intriguing and interesting. Everybody chose one genre for their music magazine, I chosen Alternative Rock for mine as that is my favourite genre of music so I looked at other alternative rock music magazines like kerang and NME etc. for inspiration and I came across a magazine front cover of one of my favourite bands the Stone Roses from an NME magazine it was an image of Ian Brown with members of other Manchester bands behind him, this was the inspiration for my magazines front cover, once I seen this i was hooked on it.
This is the front cover Ian Brown from the stone roses centre and Bez and Sean Ryder from the happy mondays faded in the background to the right and left of the Stone roses frontman.
This was my final magazine front cover, fair to say I got close to what i wanted, I called my magazine Iconic rock because something that one of my favourite bands the stone roses say all the time is that they are iconic so i thought it fitted right with them being an alternative band and my magazine being an alternative music magazine. This was edited using photoshop at first and then moved onto indesign, I am really proud of this work because I think I got really close to what I was going for and I am proud of being able to edit in the way I did, the photo shoot was done in a green screen room.
We had to produce 3 pages for our magazine, a front cover, a contents page and a double page spread.
I was very pleased with this, my contents page as it meets all the codes and conventions for an average contents page, it can direct people as to where everything is e.g what page everything is on and whats on what page. There are two images on this page, one of them from a gig I went to, my brothers mates band played in studio 2 and they are the main focus for my Double page spread as I got to interview my brothers mate who is the lead guitarist and singer, the second image is of a concert I went too in Manchester on the 15th of December 2016, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who are my favourite band, I have mentioned them in the contents page and on the front cover, this is why I put the picture in here, all the photos I have taken myself from my phone, the contents page was created and edited using Indesign.
This is a picture of my Double page spread, I was also very happy with this because again it showed off my use of Indesign and that I am capable of using it. I feel like my double page spread stood out to everyone else's because where everyone else chose to make up their own fake interview with a fake name of a fake singer/band, I actually got a real local band to do an interview with me for my Double page spread, 2 of my brothers friends are in a band together, they're called Damsels and they are an alternative rock band so really it was a golden opportunity for me to interview them, the lead singer, my brothers good friend Greg gave me some really good in detail answers for my interview, I also fitted in some images from one of their gigs that I went too, again all the images were taken from my own phone, I was really proud of my double page spread and I think it was a really good creative idea from me to do a real interview with a real band and made my double page spread stand out.
Overall I really enjoyed the freedom and creativity we were allowed for this project and it really helped me grow as a media student, this was by far my favourite part of the year.
Another part of the year I really enjoyed was our visit to media city in Solford, greater Manchester it was a really eye opening experience as to how the world of media works, we got to see the BBC studios, ITV studios and a few others. We got to go and see where match of the day is filmed at BBC sport, it was also on transfer deadline day so we got to keep up to date on what was going on in football, we also got to see where judge rinder gets filmed and where countdown gets filmed, we got to see the studios that big companies have to work with, its litteraly a big space, everything has to be done by the shows production crew from scratch. We also got to see the radio stations, where most of BBCs radio shows are broadcasted from, we got to see what they have to work with and how it works when theyre interviewing people in the radio room and where bands have played live in the studio, our tour guide told us the biggest band they ever had on the show was Arctic Monkeys, in that particular studio.
These are two pictures i took from the studio .
We then got took to where BBC breakfast is filmed, I couldn't believe how small it was, it looks really big on the televison but in reality its tiny, the reporters have a hard job, theyre always wearing an earpiece and have people constantly talking in their ear, not even neccisarly to them, they just have to block out everything until they hear theyre name and the text they have to read is either under the glass table or in the camera, the weather man/woman has the hardest job though, all of us had a go of doing that and it was a real challenge.
These were my two favourite parts of my Media AS level, I also feel I done really well in my exam.
Now I am looking forward to year 13 and my A2, I am especially looking forward to my summer project of making my own music video, the music video I have chosen is the Red Hot Chili Peppers song Dani California, it is very abstract and different, it is also one of the best music videos of all time and I am really looking forward to starting it and I have already started planning for it, I have my cast and I am ready to start recording any day now. The video explores all the different eras of rock music, rockabilly, the British Invasion, Psychedelia, glam, punk, hair metal, and grunge, since this video rock has evolved even more, so I have decided to put my own twist on it with the eras Ive already mentioned but also including Madchester , Britpop, Indie and adult alternative.
In the Dani California music video the band imitate people from all the eras e.g the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis and Kurt Cobain, i will include all of these but also include the stone roses, oasis, the killers and arctic monkeys etc. If I cant do this, my backup video is Nirvana's smells like teen spirit.

Cant stop - music video - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Cant stop is another one of Red Hot Chili peppers most instantly recognisable songs .
Here are the lyrics:
Can't stop addicted to the shindig
Here are the lyrics:
Can't stop addicted to the shindig
Cop top he says I'm gonna win big
Choose not a life of imitation
Distant cousin to the reservation
Defunkt the pistol that you pay for
This punk the feeling that you stay for
In time I want to be your best friend
East side love is living on the west end
Knock out but boy you better come to
Don't die you know the truth is some do
Go write your message on the pavement
Burn so bright I wonder what the wave meant
White heat is screaming in the jungle
Complete the motion if you stumble
Go ask the dust for any answers
Come back strong with 50 belly dancers
Choose not a life of imitation
Distant cousin to the reservation
Defunkt the pistol that you pay for
This punk the feeling that you stay for
In time I want to be your best friend
East side love is living on the west end
Knock out but boy you better come to
Don't die you know the truth is some do
Go write your message on the pavement
Burn so bright I wonder what the wave meant
White heat is screaming in the jungle
Complete the motion if you stumble
Go ask the dust for any answers
Come back strong with 50 belly dancers
The world I love
The tears I drop
To be part of
The wave can't stop
Ever wonder if it's all for you
The world I love
The trains I hop
To be part of
The wave can't stop
Come and tell me when it's time to
The tears I drop
To be part of
The wave can't stop
Ever wonder if it's all for you
The world I love
The trains I hop
To be part of
The wave can't stop
Come and tell me when it's time to
Sweetheart is bleeding in the snow cone
So smart she's leading me to ozone
Music the great communicator
Use two sticks to make it in the nature
I'll get you into penetration
The gender of a generation
The birth of every other nation
Worth your weight the gold of meditation
This chapter's going to be a close one
Smoke rings I know your going to blow one
All on a spaceship persevering
Use my hands for everything but steering
Can't stop the spirits when they need you
Mop tops are happy when they feed you
J. Butterfly is in the treetop
Birds that blow the meaning into bebop
So smart she's leading me to ozone
Music the great communicator
Use two sticks to make it in the nature
I'll get you into penetration

Wait a minute I'm passing out
Win or lose just like you
Far more shocking
Than anything I ever knew
How about you
Ten more reasons
Why I need somebody new just like you
Far more shocking than anything I ever knew
Right on cue
Win or lose just like you

Than anything I ever knew

Kick start the golden generator
Sweet talk but don't intimidate her
Can't stop the gods from engineering
Feel no need for any interfering
Your image in the dictionary
This life is more than ordinary
Can I get two maybe even three of these
Coming from space
To teach you of the pliedes
Can't stop the spirits when they need you
This life is more than just a read through

It was released onto their album by the way in 2002, it was the bands 3rd single off this album following by the way and zephyr song, cant stop was the Red Hot Chili Peppers eighth number 1 on billboard modern rock tracks, it spent 3 weeks topping the chart and peaked at 57 on the billboard top 100. The song also done well in other stations around the world.
Cant stop has been preformed over 500 times since 2002, the bands most performed song, and has mostly been used as their opening song.
The target audience for this music video would be of course fans of the band but then also maybe the band are trying to reach out to new fans so a secondary target audience could be teenagers and young people who are constantly exploring and discovering new music, or just to reach out to fans of their genre of music however the Chili peppers are a mixture of alot of different genres and is why they have such a huge following they appeal to rock fans, alternative rock, funk rock, rap rock, and even some metal fans are drawn to the band this really does show how diverse the band are and how creative the band are, this video also isn't really aimed at a specific gender race or sexuality etc. its simply just a weird video.
This video has a few close up shots but no extreme close ups, the opening of the video is the best example of a close up shot.
The video in my opinion just does meet the typical codes and conventions for a funk/alternative rock song, it does feature the band playing their instruments at some point.
I think the audience would just expect something either weird or creative and abstract from a band like these and this video is all of those things.

The song itself stands out on the album because it sounds like the early Chili Peppers songs, funk, whereas the whole album sounds like a real rock album.
The music video was directed by Mark Romanek, the video is pretty ,much just all 4 members of the band doing random weird things throughout, the image above is just 3 John Fruciante's in a wheely bin singing other parts of the video include all of the band trying to balance buckets on their heads. The video begins with the camera zooming in through a yellow tube, at the end of the tube is Anthony Kiedis in glasses singing the lyrics of the song. The inspiration for the video was an Austrian artist called Erwin Wurm a particular piece by the artist was the main influence and that was his one minute sculptures hence why the band are preforming random scenes with no meaning or purpose, thats sort of their style in general they're just weird.
I chose this video because it is one of my favourite songs of all time and it is probably my most listened to song it is also by my favourite band of all time, I chose the video because its just straight up weird and random just like the Chili Peppers.

Below is a storyboard for the video just so show how weird the video really is:
(it doesn't let me take screenshots on my laptop so I have watched the video repeatedly so I know what images to put and what order to put them in) The video begins with the camera continuously zooming down a long yellow tube until eventually it reaches Anthony Kiedis' face it then stops and he begins to sing. The next scene in the video cuts to all 4 members of the band jogging through a hallway all with huge L.E.D lights on their backs like backpacks. It then goes back to Kiedis singing again. The next scene is the band being slightly normal doing what they'd usually be doing whilst performing with a big orange screen behind them, it pretty much goes back and fourth between those three scenes I've mentioned with a few little random scenes in too, I have also included these random moments in my storyboard.

Smells like teen spirit- music video- Nirvana
Smells like teen spirit is Nirvanas most popular song by far and has a great video to go with it, the video is the band, Dave Grohl, Krist Noveselic and Kurt Cobain playing a concert to kids in a sports hall in a school, sort of in a party setting the video and the song are equally as famous, the song is one of the most instantly recognisable songs of all time but wasnt expected to be as famous as it became.
The song was released onto the bands second and best selling Album and one of the greatest Albums of all time Nevermind.
The song was released on the 10th of September 1991, it was recorded in may 1991.The unexpected Success of the song reached the top of the charts in 1992 and is often argued as the moment alternative rock became mainstream music, it was the bands biggest hit reaching number 6 on the billboard top 100 and reached high on all music charts all around the world.
In an interview with rolling stone in 1994 Kurt Cobain revealed that when he wrote the song he was trying to sound like a band he really liked called pixies, he said he was trying to rip them off and write the ultimate pop song, he arguably wasnt far off this goal he said he connected with the band in a way that he thought he should have been in them or at least a cover band.
The song came out on the radio on August 27th 1991 but released two weeks later however the song did not initially reach the charts and it only sold well in regions of the USA whilst the band already had an established fan base. So with the band realising the song wasnt doing to well they thought come as you are would be the single to reach a mainstream audience however modern rock and campus radio noticed the song was actually good and placed it on heavy rotation.
The music video was the director Samuel Bayer's first video, he thought the band had chosen him because his test reel was so poor, the band thought his production would be punk and not corporate, the band hated everything corporate, the video as I said earlier is based on a school concert which ends in a big riot, the inspiration for the video was from a film called over the edge aswell as another called rock n roll high school it was filmed at a sound stage at culver city the band are playing a pep rally the video would keep switching to a janitor in a blue jump suit dancing with a brush, the video ends with everyone destroying the bands equipment. The budget for the video was between 30,000 and 50,000 dollars. Critics said it looks like the greatest gig you could imagine. In 2000 the Guinness world book of records announced that smells like teen spirit was the most played video on MTV Europe. MTV themselves said the video has changed the look of MTV forever, rolling stone placed the video as number 2 for their 100 best music videos of all time in 2000, VH1 placed smells like teen spirit as number 18 for their 2000s 100 greatest Rock N roll moments on TV, the song has been parodied twice, so has the video. The video has over 555 million views on youtube as of June 2017.

Bring your friends
It's fun to lose and to pretend
She's overboard, self assured
Oh no I know, a dirty word
It's fun to lose and to pretend
She's overboard, self assured
Oh no I know, a dirty word
Hello, hello, hello, how low [x3]
Hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello
With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an Albino
A mosquito, my libido, yeah
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an Albino
A mosquito, my libido, yeah
Hey, yay
I'm worse at what I do best
And for this gift, I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end
And for this gift, I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end
Hello, hello, hello, how low [x3]
Hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello
With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an Albino
A mosquito, my libido, yeah
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an Albino
A mosquito, my libido, yeah
Hey, yay
And I forget just why I taste
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard, it was hard to find
Oh well, whatever, nevermind
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard, it was hard to find
Oh well, whatever, nevermind
Hello, hello, hello, how low [x3]
Hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello

Dani California- music video- Red Hot Chili Peppers
Dani California is one of the best music videos of all time, fact it was nominated for 11 awards for best video and really shows off Red Hot Chili Peppers creativity, especially Anthony Kiedis as it was his idea for this video. The video explores all the different eras of rock music from the very beginning, Flea, the bass player has said the band focused more on the eras than actual people however some of the people shown are crucial to the evolution of rock music and defined the era like The Beatles, Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, David Bowie, Nirvana and the Chili peppers themselves of course, Flea said the eras the band focused on were rockabilly, British invasion, psychedelic, funk, glam, punk, Goth, hair metal, grunge and of course themselves as flea said, whatever they fall into The video starts with a curtain opening and Anthony Kiedis is behind it dressed as Elvis.
I think the primary target audience for this music video would be fans of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, I also think the secondary target audience for this video would be fans of music in general especially rock music, fans of rock music of all ages and genders also seen as they cover almost every era of rock music and the evolution of the genre so this would draw a lot of attention in my opinion because a video as creative as this would get people talking so people would watch it for all different types of reasons for example you could have an old person who is a fan of Elvis and the Beatles watch it for the reason that they imitate those performers in this video or a young teenager, which is predominantly the fan base of Nirvana would view this video because of the part where they imitate Nirvana so this video would bring people into watch it from old to young so in this case that is a very smart idea, I think the purpose of the video is to do this also and is very clever by the band.
This is Kiedis as Elvis with the other members of the band john flea and chad surrounding him, this is representing the beginning of rock and roll.
Throughout the video the band pose as many others people from different eras of rock n roll.
The next era they imitate is post Beatles rock n roll and all that followed.
The next era is the band imitating the Beatles (60s) from their first US TV performance when the British takeover begun on the Ed Sullivan show.
The next the band imitate is the Jimi Hendrix experience falling under the psychedelia era.
The band then move onto the grunge era in the 90s and in this image Anthony Kiedis is imitating Kurt Cobain from nirvana, this is almost a tribute to nirvana, the two bands were good friends as they toured alot together flea also has played with Nirvana before, this particular image is kiedis imitating kurt cobain from his last Tv performance on mtv unplugged before he died.
These are just a few of the themes from the famous, award winning music video from one of the best bands in the world.
However, even with the video being so brilliant, the video doesn't really have anything to do with what the lyrics are about, Dani california is about a girl who keidis was in love with her name was Dani, he is talking about her young death , she is a poor young girl from the south who eventually ended up living in california, she became a mother and lived a fast unsettled life, the song basically narrates Danis life and how she was born in Mississippi and her death to a man who was from North Dakota whilst she was on her way to Minnesota. Dani has appeared in a few of the bands songs from several albums over the course of 7 years she first appeared in the song Californication, from the album Californication from 1999 the lyric that refers to her is 'teenage bride with a baby inside getting high on information', this was her first of many references in some of the bands hit songs. She was next mentioned in the 2002 single By the way, from the album By the way the reference is in the chorus of this song too 'dani the girl whos singing songs to me beneath the marquee'.
Dani California was released onto the album Stadium Arcadium in 2006, it wasn't just the video for Dani california that was grabbing all the awards, the song itself won the grammy for best rock song 2006 and best rock performance.
I really cant think what relevance there is from the video to the song and the lyrics, but they are both great, here are the lyrics :
This is one of my favourite songs from my favourite band, and it has a brilliant video, this is why i chose it, the song lasts 4 minutes 42 seconds, the working name of the song was Wu-tang because chad smiths drumming sounded like drumming from Wu tangs fist Album, though they ended up sounding like the drumming from sweet home Alabama.
The label for the brand is Warner Bros, it was produced by Rick Ruben, like so many others of the Chili peppers songs and videos.
The song entered the billboard hot 100 at number 26 and peaked to number 6 it remained at number 6 for two weeks once reaching there, it is only the second song ever to debut at number 1 on the modern rock track charts, the music video was premiered on mtv on the 4th of April 2006, it was directed by Tony Kaye, director of american history x who was only accepted after initial choice mark romanek declined the opportunity. The song has been the band's most performed from the album with over 330 performances as of 2017 , still never played it when i went though.
I chose Dani California because it is one of my favourite songs by my favourite band, also it is probably the best music video of all time, it is so creative and nobody has done anything like it before, its just special, there's a reason its won so many awards I also have decided this is the video I want to do for my music video, it will be a challenge and I like a challenge and I know it will take a lot of planning but I would love to recreate my favourite music video and one of the best and more abstract videos of all time
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sb5aq5HcS1A
Below is a storyboard of the video I have chosen the key points and transitions of the video mainly where the band switch to the next era which is every 2 or so verses. The song opens with the era of rockabilly (Elvis) then second era is the British Invasion (the Beatles) followed by psychedelia (Jimi Hendrix) fourth then being funk, the fifth era is glam, then the sixth is punk (sex pistols) seventh then being goth, then the eighth era is hair metal followed by Grunge (Kurt Cobain) then the last era is the Chili Peppers as themselves.
Getting born in the state of Mississippi
Her papa was a copper, and her mama was a hippy
In Alabama she will swing a hammer
Price you got to pay when you break the panorama
She never knew that there was anything more than all
What in the world does your compliment take me for?
Black bandanna, sweet Louisiana
Robbing on a bank in the state of Indiana
She's a runner
Rebel, and a stunner
Come to Mirawais saying baby, watcha gonna?
Looking down the barrel of a hot bell forty-five
Just another way to survive
Her papa was a copper, and her mama was a hippy
In Alabama she will swing a hammer
Price you got to pay when you break the panorama
She never knew that there was anything more than all
What in the world does your compliment take me for?
Black bandanna, sweet Louisiana
Robbing on a bank in the state of Indiana
She's a runner
Rebel, and a stunner
Come to Mirawais saying baby, watcha gonna?
Looking down the barrel of a hot bell forty-five
Just another way to survive
California, rest in peace
Simultaneous release
California, show your teeth
She's my priestess
I'm your priest
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Simultaneous release
California, show your teeth
She's my priestess
I'm your priest
Yeah, yeah, yeah
She's a lover
Baby, and a fighter
Should a seen it coming when I got a little brighter
With a name like Dani California
Day was gonna come when I was gonna mourn ya
A little low
That she was stealing another bread
I love my baby to death
Baby, and a fighter
Should a seen it coming when I got a little brighter
With a name like Dani California
Day was gonna come when I was gonna mourn ya
A little low
That she was stealing another bread
I love my baby to death
California, rest in peace
Simultaneous release
California, show your teeth
She's my priestess
I'm your priest
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Simultaneous release
California, show your teeth
She's my priestess
I'm your priest
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Who knew the hardest side of you?
Who knew the hardest time to prove?
Too true to say goodbye to you
Too true to say, say, say
Who knew the hardest time to prove?
Too true to say goodbye to you
Too true to say, say, say
Pushed the fader
Gifted animator
One for the now
And eleven for the later
Never made it up to Minnesota
North Dakota man
Wasn't gunnin' for the quota
Down in the Badlands she was saving the best for last
It only hurts when I laugh
Gone to fade
Gifted animator
One for the now
And eleven for the later
Never made it up to Minnesota
North Dakota man
Wasn't gunnin' for the quota
Down in the Badlands she was saving the best for last
It only hurts when I laugh
Gone to fade
California, rest in peace

I'm your priest
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Simultaneous release

I'm your priest
Yeah, yeah, yeah

I'm your priest
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Simultaneous release
